- Telemarketing means terrible things to many people who are tired of being bothered, both by scams and by legitimate but intrusive calls.
- When we break down the true meaning of the word, though, it’s easier to see how things can be much better.
- Distance is no longer an impediment to genuine and mutually beneficial business relationships.
- Companies can take the time to build those relationships naturally and get better results than with robocalls and email spam.
- Boomsourcing provides the services and platforms companies need to grow without annoying their prospects!
For multiple decades, telemarketing has been the bane of corporate directors and families just sitting down for dinner everywhere.
This practice has come to be associated with the very concepts of interruption, rudeness, and inconvenience. Some would even call it outright harassment.
And it’s no secret why. People are sick of having their phones ring off the hook to try to sell them something they don’t want. The calls always seem to come at the worst possible time, too!
But things are changing.
There’s a new and better way to look at this concept that has gotten such a poor reputation.
Breaking Down Telemarketing
There is tremendous power in language, and the words we use mean very specific things. What those meanings are for each of us and all of us together has the tendency to change over time.
As people living in a social context, we have a tendency to think about things with very narrow perspectives. We base our point of view on what we ourselves see, hear, and feel.
When we dig into concepts a bit more, though, and learn their history, we discover greater possibilities.
The word “telemarketing” is a union of something very old with something quite new.
“Tele” is an ancient Greek root word that means “at a distance” or “far off.”
“Marketing” is the far more modern “study and management of exchange relationships.”
So, while it has come to mean “selling stuff over the phone” in our culture, what are we really talking about?
We’re talking about studying and managing exchange relationships while being physically distant from them.
That makes a huge difference in how we approach our work!
Embracing the Distance
The first thing to recognize is that modern communications technology has made it possible for genuine relationships to flourish without physical proximity.
In many cases, it no longer matters whether you’re in the same room as someone or on opposite sides of the planet. You can still communicate with each other.
This is hard on personal relationships still, because we generally prefer to be able to enjoy a relationship with all of our senses. For business, though, that’s not necessary.
That’s why the inventions of radio, telephony, television, digital communications, and the internet have each contributed to explosions of economic activity. The past two centuries have been more prosperous for more people then all the rest of history combined. And it’s largely because of the power of telecommunication.
These technologies that let us speak across great distances mean that we’re no longer limited in our business relationships to the people that we happen to be physically close to. Especially with increasingly powerful translation tools, we can reach out to anyone!
But should we?
Smarter And Better Marketing
As we’ve noted, not everyone wants to be sold to, and certainly not constantly.
That, in itself, is a solid indication that something about phone marketing is not as effective as it could be.
There’s also the stereotype of the pushy and shrewd salesman that gets magnified a hundredfold by an intrusive phone call.
The reality is that excellent sales success has always been based on the power of genuine relationships forged over time. A barrage of unwelcome solicitation is a relationship in name only, and certainly not a good or healthy one for either party.
Smarter marketing uses the modern communications and research tools that are available to cultivate real relationships.
Using social media, sales professionals can now establish productive and helpful relationships with prospective customers long before scheduling a phone call to talk about a mutually beneficial exchange.
That’s light years ahead of robocalls and spam in the race for customers!
